Register now before it’s too late!

Spring is (almost) in the air, and that means fresh opportunities for families in Winkler! The Winkler Family Resource Centre (WFRC) has opened registration for its March and April programs, offering a wide variety of activities for young children and caregivers. But don’t wait too long—registration closes Wednesday at noon! You can sign up at wfrc.ca under the register tab, with confirmations sent out by Thursday at 5:00 PM.

Exciting programs for families

WFRC is rolling out several engaging programs that focus on early childhood development and parent-child bonding. Here’s a quick look at what’s available:

1. Play to Learn, Learn to Play

This program allows kids to explore open-ended play while parents learn about the benefits of play-based learning. It’s a great way to discover how your child likes to play and how to encourage it at home.

2. Ready, Set, Go!

One of the most popular programs, Ready, Set, Go is designed for children entering kindergarten this fall. It provides a classroom-like setting where kids can get familiar with literacy and numeracy skills before starting school.

3. Growing Together

This brand-new program features guest speaker Jenna Luptak, a pediatric occupational therapist from Beautiful Bend Therapy. It focuses on sensory skills, motor development, and learning strategies for young children.

4. Low German program: "Lact unt Lieet"

A special opportunity for Low German-speaking families! This program teaches rhymes, counting, and other early learning activities in Low German. Facilitator Ms. Lisa leads the way in making language learning fun and interactive.

5. Stay and Play (Drop-in program)

For families looking for a flexible option, Stay and Play is a drop-in session available on Fridays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (as long as GVSD schools are running). No registration required—just stop by, let the kids enjoy the playstations, and grab a cup of coffee!

6. Breastfeeding Class for expecting moms

In partnership with Two Peaks Consulting, this one-time session covers latching techniques, breastfeeding basics, and answers common questions from expectant mothers. A great resource for new and soon-to-be moms!

Save the date: Teddy Bear Picnic returns June 7th

One of Winkler’s most beloved events, the Teddy Bear Picnic, is making a return on June 7th! This event teaches kids about healthcare in a fun, hands-on way. Children bring their teddy bears for check-ups with doctors, dentists, chiropractors, and other healthcare professionals. The goal? To help kids feel more comfortable with medical visits by seeing their stuffed animals go through the process first.

The WFRC is also looking for healthcare professionals who want to participate. If you’re interested, email director@wfrc.ca to get involved.

Why families love WFRC

Beyond just the educational aspect, WFRC is a place where parents and caregivers can build connections, support each other, and create a sense of community. According to Chantal Human, who has been with the centre for over two years, many parents have found that these programs improve their mental health by helping them connect with other adults who share similar experiences.

“It takes a village to raise a child, and it’s getting harder to find that village,” said Human. “At WFRC, we’re helping build that community.”
