Estevan sidewalks are getting messy as a freeze-thaw cycle is seeing icy conditions lead to mushy walking surfaces.
The city would like to see more people keeping those sidewalks cleared as the conditions are expected to last through the week.
City Councillor Shelly Veroba says that it's important to make sure everyone has a path to walk on.
"It would just be appreciated by everybody in the city that uses the sidewalk to transport themselves to and from work or school, especially young mothers who are walking their children and strollers."
"Also we have seniors and some people with disabilities that use walkers and so we would be very much appreciated if these people could go out in front of their house, just clear off that sidewalk. So as we get the melt happening, we don't have icy conditions."
If those areas aren't cleared off Veroba says the city even has the option of fines for people.
"We do have bylaws and so what happens with bylaws, they do come out and they notice that your sidewalks has not been shovelled, then they will give you a notice and just request that you shovel it and they'll give you a time frame to have that shovelled. Then after it's not shoveled, you could face a fine."
For those who may not be able to physically shovel their sidewalks, Veroba says that there are options in town to help out with that.
"I know there's a lot of comprehensive school kids who need hours for gym, so they have to basically get some type of community service so you could contact maybe the high school to see if there's any kids that are interested in coming out and doing some volunteer work."
"We also have other organizations like the United Way Estevan, that could even be contacted. We have the Day of Caring every year that helps out in the spring, so we could be able to maybe take that and look out for some organizations or some people that could help people out who could not shovel their own sidewalks."
Veroba encourages people to keep their sidewalks clean in order to avoid that extra bill from the city.
"Please go ahead and do what you can to keep your sidewalks clean. Because again, if the city has to come and do it for you, then that is the actual part of the bylaw. What happens is the city does it for you then it's just added on to your tax bill the end of the year.
