The Humboldt Broncos were unable to move closer to a playoff spot on Wednesday as the Weyburn Red Wings picked up a 4-2 victory in Humboldt.
With the loss, the Broncos remain in 7th place in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) standings, trailing Battlefords by one point.
Jerome Maharaj opened the scoring for Weyburn, capitalizing on a penalty shot.
The Red Wings extended their advantage as Braigh LeGrandeur.
In the second period, the lone goal was a result of a deflection by Wyatt LaCoste as the Broncos found themselves by three heading into the final 20 minutes.
Humboldt staged a late rally, Oakley McIlwain scored on the powerplay with a shot from the point to put the green and gold on the scoreboard.
Marik Mamic got the Broncos within one as he scored his 22nd goal of the year, to put the Broncos within one goal with less than three minutes left in the game.
But Weyburn would remove any hopes of a Broncos comeback as Luke Dekay scored an empty netter to seal the win for the Red Wings.
Former Broncos netminder Ty Matonovich made 38 saves to pick up the win against his former squad.
Dazza Mitchell was also facing his former team, as he made 29 saves.
Humboldt was 1-4 on the power play and successfully killed off all four penalties.
The Broncos now have six games remaining on their schedule, with only two more home games at the Elgar Petersen Arena.
This weekend, Humboldt will head out on a crucial two-game eastern road trip as they battle the Yorkton Terriers on Friday night and then meet the Melville Millionaires on Saturday.
