Salem Home is inviting the community to join in on an evening of fun and friendly competition at its upcoming Crokinole Tournament on March 6th at 6:30 PM. While the game itself is sure to bring excitement, the heart of the event is about something much deeper—connecting the community with the residents of Salem Home.
Building a sense of home
“The main goal is to connect the community with the residents at Salem Home,” says Karin Oliviera, CEO of Salem Home. “We would like to have the community coming in and feeling like it’s grandma’s home, where they can come and visit, maybe have a cup of coffee with one of the residents, or play a game of Crokinole.”
Salem Home has been working hard to create an environment that feels more like a home than an institution. “We have worked and continue to work on making it a home. You walk into Salem Home, and you don’t have the typical smell of a personal care home or a hospital. It smells like food—good food,” Oliviera explained.
A night of fun and fundraising
Over 30 teams have already registered for the tournament, which is now full, but spectators are welcome to come and cheer on the players. The event will also feature snacks for purchase, by donation.
“We will also be selling raffle tickets for a quilt that our residents made,” says Oliviera. “It’s a special way for people to support Salem Home and take home something meaningful.” Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the event and at Salem Home starting Monday, March 4th.
Supporting Salem park
The Crokinole Tournament is more than just an evening of entertainment—it’s also a fundraiser for Salem Park.
“The money raised will go towards buying benches for Salem Park,” Oliviera explains. “We started fundraising in October for the concrete, and we will continue raising funds for different park features, including a fountain and trees. We want to create an inviting space where people can come, sit, and maybe go for a walk with a resident.”
She also emphasizes the broader impact of these efforts. “When people support Salem Home, they’re raising money for themselves, for their future,” she says. “We may not all end up here, but chances are, if you live to old age, you’ll visit Salem Home in some way.”
