Business is a little bit shaky recently as tariff threats have been coming and going over the past month with a potential 25 per cent tariff coming from the US.
That's been looked at with dread by economists and businesses as an economic slowdown may be on the horizon.
Estevan Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Merissa Scarlett says that in a stressful time for businesses they should focus on what they can do.
"I think my advice in this time kind of situation for businesses would be to control what you can control. A lot of this, it seems like it's out of our hands and I know that our provincial and federal governments are working their best to avoid the tariff situation."
Scarlett says that it may actually be a time when businesses would need to look towards expansions in order to better weather whatever the economy throws at them next.
"Control what you can control, number one, and focus on your business, and maybe it's time to make that investment in some other things. Make yourself more efficient or look for other opportunities besides the United States.
"I would advise them to reach out to the Chamber just if you're looking for specific resources. Whether you're going through a slowdown and looking at layoffs, or if you want to look for expansion and where do you go from there, so there's a lot of resources to kind of help and assist you at this time. And as I said, it can feel very overwhelming. So just remember, take a breath, focus on your business, and I think we'll get through this."
Besides the business hurdles that are incoming, Scarlett also reminds people to keep a focus on their own mental health.
"For dealing with mental health, always talk to somebody, find another business owner that you know you can talk to, see how they're faring with it. Come on out to one of our chamber events to hear how others are dealing with it. Just so you're not alone."
"If you're feeling that things aren't going well, then just make sure you're talking to who you need to talk to as far as mental health-wise. If you have someone in your life that takes care of that or uses your employee benefits, maybe provide your employees with information on how to access their benefits so that they know that they have support as well."
