It is with heavy hearts; we share the passing of ‘Gramma’ Bertha. She was one incredible pioneer woman living her life to the fullest.

Bertha Wells (nee Loverick), of Morse, Saskatchewan, age 98, passed peacefully on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at the Herbert Integrated Health Facility in Herbert, Saskatchewan. She was born June 30, 1926, youngest daughter of six children. Bertha was predeceased by her husband Burton, her parents, George and Helen Loverick; her sisters, Barbara and Alice; and her brothers, Frank, George, and Joe.

Bertha is survived by her sons; Doug (Angel), Dale (Deb); grandchildren, Clinton (Kate), Miranda (Tarra), Brody (Rayna), Lindsay (Stu); great grandchildren, Ethan and Evelyn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and all the others who affectionately referred to her as ‘gramma’ (you know who you are).

Bertha was raised on a small homestead in the McEachern District. Unfortunately, her mother passed away when she was a very young girl. Times were tough and she learned at a young age how to help out and work hard, admirable traits she carried throughout her whole life.

Burt and Bertha married in December,1948. They lived and worked in several southern Saskatchewan communities while raising their family, eventually settling in Morse as their forever home. As a long time, resident in the town of Morse, Bertha was respected and well- loved in the community. She made time for everyone, and worked tirelessly to maintain her home, beloved garden and yard. Bertha was always in battle mode with those darn portulaca weeds!

Bertha believed by volunteering; you inspire others to get involved to make a positive change in the community. Over the years, she definitely ‘walked the walk’ as a leader in Morse to help spark and motivate others to do the same. The following are a couple of the organizations Bertha was a proud volunteer with: She was an active member with the Legion in Saskatchewan for 45 years, involving herself with many legion functions. In 1980, Bertha was one of the founding members with the Morse Cultural Museum and was an active member for

44 years. The museum was part of the passion she had for preserving history and passing that knowledge on to others, young and old.

Last summer, Bertha was honoured at the Morse library which opened in 1971. She was the first Librarian and in the first year, she had 7,000 books circulated. Anyone who knew Bertha would not be surprised, as she had a gift and such determination when it came to getting things done and getting them done right! If you needed tickets sold, Bertha was your gal! She retired from the library after 4 years to work at the local Post Office until 1991.

Bertha was known for her wonderful sense of humour and loved to tell a good story. She lived her life to the fullest; travelling, baking (her buns and pies will be so missed), gardening, sewing, chatting with friends, spending time with family, and she was so very proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bertha may have been tiny in build but ever so mighty in stature - she lived independently in her own home up until a few days before her passing.

Thank you to Dr. Kassett, nurses and all the staff at Herbert Hospital for their genuine friendship, kindness and care for mom. Thank you to all her dearest friends and close neighbours who so lovingly looked out for her.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour Bertha’s memory are invited make a donation to the Morse Cultural Museum or a charity of choice. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
