Two towns near Airdrie have been named among the best downtowns in the Prairies.
According to WorldAtlas.com, an online geography resource, Didsbury ranked second, and Strathmore placed fifth on an eight-town list recognizing historic buildings, local attractions, and community spaces.
Didsbury’s downtown reflects early fire-prevention bylaws that required brick construction, and the Didsbury & District Museum, housed in a former school, highlights the town’s history. Kinsmen Park provides nearby green space, while Blue Door Concerts hosts live music. Restaurants such as The Caddy Shack serve locals and visitors alike.
In recent years, Didsbury has also emerged as a filming destination. The town served as the fictional setting of Wynonna Earp, attracting fans worldwide during the 2024 Earptopia Convention.
More than 200 visitors toured key filming locations and attended a special prop showcase. Mayor Rhonda Hunter called it an opportunity to "share our town with these fans," reinforcing Didsbury’s growing reputation beyond its historical significance.
Didsbury has also been a backdrop for productions such as Under the Banner of Heaven, Fargo and Die, My Love. The town’s Old Fire Hall has been a frequent filming site, including scenes from Under the Banner of Heaven. Most recently, film crews returned in October 2024 for an undisclosed project, adding to the town’s increasing presence in Alberta’s film industry.
Strathmore’s downtown includes restaurants like the Roadhouse Restaurant & Saloon, while Kinsmen Park serves as a central gathering space. Eagle Lake, located a short drive away, provides outdoor recreation. The Strathmore Golf Club remains popular, and the Lawrence Hilton Memorial Park recognizes a long-time community member.
WorldAtlas.com ranked Steinbach, Man. first, citing its active downtown, historic clock tower and automotive history.
Coming in at third was Nanton, recognized for the Bomber Command Museum of Canada and the historic Nanton Grain Elevators.
Morden in Manitoba, ranked fourth, was noted for hosting the annual Corn and Apple Festival and housing the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre.
At sixth, Winkler, Man. was highlighted for its heritage museum and the Discovery Nature Sanctuary.
Lacombe, which placed seventh, is known for its historic murals and the Flatiron Building Museum.
Rounding out the list at eighth, Selkirk, Man. was featured for its fishing heritage, including the Selkirk Lift Bridge and the Chuck the Channel Cat statue.
