The Family Place in Weyburn received a sizable donation from Vermillion Energy this past Friday. The company presented $10,000 for the green space at The Family Place’s location on McLelland Drive.

Executive Director of The Family Place, Dawn Gutzke, explained that the money is part of an ongoing commitment from Vermillion for the green space.

“We call it our Vermillion Green Space,” Gutzke said. “It’s to help us maintain the green space throughout the whole entire year, and also do some upgrades each year.”

Last year, The Family Place introduced a sensory garden in the front of the green space, and this year they are planning to expand it, and possibly plant some community gardens in the garden boxes to grow the area.

“Having a green space has always been a dream for The Family Place,” Gutzke added. The previous location on 4th Street in downtown didn’t have the same outdoor space.

“To be able to just walk outside with the children and have that area right there in our own space, and not have to load them up in our van and haul them anywhere, it’s just been really amazing these last two years to have that,” Gutzke said, noting they utilizie the space almost daily.

The space at The Family Place isn’t just for their use, either. Gutzke stated that families are welcome to use the space in the evenings.

“It’s just another great space in our community for families to enjoy.”
