With the end of winter in sight, the Saskatchewan government is reminding anglers to remove ice fishing shelters from provincial waterways before rising temperatures create unsafe water conditions.
Shelters must be removed by March 15 for areas south of Highway 16 while shelters have until March 31 for northern regions of the province.
Hefty fines could be issued to individuals who don’t remove the shelters, as well the shelters will be confiscated along with the contents inside of the shelters. The shelters can’t be left on the shore.
When travelling on the ice, you’re asked to use caution as thickness and strength can vary. Some signs of unsafe ice include slush, pressure ridges and thermal cracks.
This year’s ice fishing season closes in southern and central Saskatchewan on March 31 and on April 15 in the northern portion of the province.
