Cecilia "Fireball" McCaskill, the Estevan Junior Coaler Rollers skater has been selected to represent Team Canada at the Junior Roller Derby World Cup in Brisbane, Australia, in July 2025. After a rigorous tryout process in Lethbridge, AB, and Chilliwack, BC, McCaskill secured her spot on the national roster. It’s an achievement she doesn’t take lightly.

“It means so much to me,” she said. “I’m the only one representing Saskatchewan, and I feel even more honoured for that.”

Her road to Team Canada wasn’t without challenges. During the final tryout, McCaskill battled food poisoning and couldn’t skate on the second day. Despite the setback, her skills and determination earned her a place among the country’s top junior roller derby athletes.

Now, she’s shifting her focus to the next challenge—fundraising. McCaskill estimates she’ll need around $7,000 to cover travel expenses for the competition and a team practice in Toronto. To help, she’s hosting a spaghetti night fundraiser at the Estevan Legion on Saturday, March 8.

“It’s $25 per plate, and we’ll have gluten-free options for anyone who needs them,” she explained. “There will also be raffles, door prizes, and possibly dessert—we’re still figuring that part out.”

Tickets are available through McCaskill or her mother, Brandy McCaskill, on Facebook, and will also be sold at the door.

McCaskill hopes to not only reach her fundraising goal but also raise awareness about roller derby in the community.

“It’s such an amazing sport, and I want more people to know about it,” she said.

Those interested in supporting her journey can attend the fundraiser or contribute through other ongoing efforts, such as a bottle drive with their SARCAN account or through an online fundraiser at this link.
