International Women’s Day is fast approaching, and Genesis House, a women’s shelter based in Winkler, is celebrating with two special events aimed at fostering community and awareness.
“We always have fun when International Women’s Day comes around,” says Ang Braun, Executive Director of Genesis House. “It’s a great opportunity to connect, celebrate, and have important conversations.”

Live Music and Cheesecake at Finer Spirits
On Saturday, Genesis House will host a music night at Finer Spirits, featuring an all-female lineup of local artists, including Kaler, Liz Madden, Sally Friesen, Victoria Nash, and Madel Morin.
“This is going to be an amazing night,” Braun shared. “We have talented women performing, great food—including cheesecake—and an opportunity for people to celebrate together. Tickets are $20, and we’re hoping to fill the place.”
The event will also feature an open mic portion, giving attendees the chance to take the stage. “There will be a guitar and keyboard available, so if people feel inclined to share their talent in a safe and supportive environment, they’re welcome to do so,” Braun added.
More than just a celebration
While International Women’s Day is a time to uplift and recognize women, Braun emphasizes that it’s also an opportunity to reflect on ways to support them in everyday life.
“Shared responsibilities at home are a huge way to support women,” Braun explains. “Studies still show that women do the majority of housework, even when working full-time. Something as simple as planning meals, loading the dishwasher, or picking a night to cook can make a big difference.”
She also highlighted the importance of calling out inequalities and ensuring women’s voices are heard. “If something seems off, speak up,” Braun urges. “Not in an aggressive way, but in a way that fosters conversation and change.”
Live music...and cheesecake
On Saturday night, March 8th, Genesis House is partnering with Finer Spirits (353 Thornhill Street Morden) for an evening of live music, featuring all-female performers. The event will showcase local artists like Kaler, Liz Madden, Sally Friesen, Victoria Nash, and Madel Morin.
"It’s going to be an amazing night with fantastic music, great company, and even cheesecake," Braun says. "We really wanted this to be a celebration of women, but it’s open to everyone. We hope to fill the place."
The event will also feature an open mic, giving attendees a chance to showcase their own musical talents. "There’s a guitar and keyboard available, so if people feel inspired to perform, they’ll be in a supportive space," Braun adds.
Women belong at the table
Braun also shares the importance of female representation in leadership roles. "I love the quote from Ruth Bader Ginsburg: 'Women belong in all places where decisions are being made,'" she says. "But really, it’s not just about women. We need to hear from minorities, newcomers, young people, and seniors, because the decisions being made affect all of us differently."
She stresses the importance of creating space for diverse voices in the community. "It’s one thing to try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, but even better is making sure there’s room for them at the table."
Genesis House continues to advocate for women's rights and support those facing domestic violence. This weekend’s events not only serve as a celebration but also as a reminder of the ongoing work needed to build a more equitable society.
