Brett Sabel of the Virden Oil Capitals announced he will be continuing his hockey and education at Marion University, NCAA - Division 3 for next season.
"I kind of grew up around Marion University," the 20-year-old Sabel said with a smile. "It's been a dream of mine to play there."
Always a team-first guy, Sabel says he's more focused on his current team than his own future. "Well, recently I haven't paid too much thought to after this year. I'm focused on making the playoffs. Over the course of the year, I've been in touch with the coach and I felt like it was the right fit for me. It's in my home town, I get to live back at home and I've always wanted to play there. I also get to play in front of my family, which has always been a goal."
It's not just the hockey Sabel is excited for, it's getting back in the class room, which he says will take some time to adjust. "Oh, I hope I'm ready," Sabel says laughing when asked about being a student again. "I grew up with some of the guys that are playing there after their time in junior, so I'm looking forward to that, too."
Sabel's year has been strong, setting new career highs in goals and points. "I've been able to just show up and be myself," Sabel said. "I've been playing my role, working hard and the pucks gone in the net, I guess."
Two massive points banked by Virden in their last game was needed if they want to make the playoffs. Sabel knows this group has what it takes. "That's our goal, we're working very hard every night. We haven't gotten the bounces but every guy is working hard and wants it really bad. We're all still in a positive mindset and our goal is to make the playoffs. Time is winding down and we want our season to go as long as we can. Hopefully we can get a couple wins here and keep things going."
Virden now sits three points back of the final spot in the west division and still have an extra game to play over Waywayseecappo.
Saturday night is the next Oil Caps contest as they'll be in Neepawa. The remainder of Virden's schedule will all be on the road.
