Midale Central School took the stage last night for their performance of Little Red and the Riding Hoods last night.

Tammy Mercer, a Grade 4/5 teacher at the school, described the play as a comical take on the traditional tale of Little Red Riding Hood.

“It involves two rival biker gangs and a narrator and a stagehand who are at odds on how and who should play roles in the play,” Mercer said.

The play has been in the works for a couple of years. “We started attempting to put it on last year, but with the work stoppages, we weren’t able to, and so we were able to make a go of it this year,” she explained.

Auditions began after winter break, and students and staff have been working hard over the past two months to prepare.

“We did one show in the afternoon for our student body, and then one open to the community last night,” Mercer said.

Mercer said the best part for her was watching the students perform and seeing their growth. “They were so nervous before, and then after the play they were just so excited, and we’re so proud of them.”

The audience stayed engaged throughout the performance, especially the younger children. “Some of the little kids especially were giggling the whole way through. There was lots of laughter. We had nothing but praise for the students and the play overall.”

Twelve students from Grade 5 to Grade 11 participated in the play.

Mercer said this was the first play the school has put on during her six years there. “And so, because we’ve had such success with it, we’re looking to make this a yearly thing.”

“Midale Central School might be a small school, but we have so much going on here and we are full of students with tons of abilities and talents, and it’s just a great place to be,” Mercer said.

“It was just so much fun to do this. It was fantastic to see all of them shine and it was great to see all the support from their peers as well.”
