The Morden Area Foundation’s annual Power of the Purse event is marking a significant milestone this year, celebrating its 10th anniversary on April 5th. The unique fundraising initiative has grown over the years, continuing to empower local donors to make an immediate impact on community organizations.
"This is the 10th anniversary of Power of the Purse," says Sue Nelson, who has been involved in the event for several years, and serves as Chairperson. "It started out as 100 women, each bringing $100, and listening to 2-3 charitable organizations present a project. The women then decide which of the charities they want to support with their $100."

Supporting local causes
The event, which takes place over brunch, has become a staple in Morden’s charitable landscape. Attendees listen to short, five-minute "elevator pitches" from selected organizations and then direct their donation toward the cause that resonates most with them.
"This year, being our 10th anniversary, we have four charities that will be presenting projects," Nelson explains. "And while the event is largely attended by women, men are certainly welcome to join as well."
In addition to individual contributions, the Morden Area Foundation is contributing an extra $10,000 in recognition of the milestone year. "That means we can give out $24,000 to these four local charities, which would be absolutely amazing," says Nelson.
How to participate
With the goal of expanding participation, the event is increasing capacity to 140 attendees this year. Tickets are $100 each, with $75 eligible for a tax receipt. "Your full $100 goes directly to the charities, thanks to our amazing sponsors," adds Nelson.
Those interested in attending can secure tickets by emailing the Morden Area Foundation at info@mordenfoundation.ca.
More than just a brunch
For many, Power of the Purse is about more than just donating—it’s about community, connection, and learning about the incredible work happening in the region.
"It’s a great opportunity to find out what’s going on in Morden, to support meaningful projects, and to enjoy a morning with friends," says Nelson.
With a decade of success behind it and thousands of dollars raised for local initiatives, Power of the Purse continues to prove the power of collective giving in shaping a stronger community.
