Flurries and freezing rain are in the forecast with a system overhead today.

A system positioning itself on top of the southeast today has the chance to bring some very nasty weather. Environment Canada is calling for a mixed possibility of flurries and rainfall over the area today, with a chance of that developing into freezing rain.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Stephen Berg says that comes in with a bit of cold which is creating a downturn in temperatures.

"It's a bit of a cold front that's coming down from the northwest and bringing some pretty strong winds for the afternoon hours or late in the morning, and then bringing the temperatures down quite a bit from the expected high of 4° to -8° by the late afternoon hours."

With the major part of the system dropping as flurries and rain, people can expect to see that through the afternoon.

Once the cold front passes through, there's a good chance any rain falling will turn to freezing rain.

Following that, the temperatures will drop further to -12° overnight once the rains let up.

That'll be followed up by a small chance of flurries tomorrow.

Berg says that with such a frosty downpour people should be careful as surfaces are likely to get slick today.

"Just stay safe. With the potential for freezing rain, with the icy surfaces, watch for some reduced visibility too, with the flurries that might arise and there might be a little bit of a few heavy bursts here and there. So just be careful if you're out on the road."

Temperatures are expected to rise sharply in the following days with double-digit positives forecasted for Thursday.
