The Estevan Sharks water polo teams are making waves as they approach the end of a standout season, with strong performances at tournaments and big goals for provincials later this month.
Paul Chabot, coach of the U9 water polo team, said the club found success at a recent competition, with one of Estevan’s two teams placing first and the other finishing third.
“There were teams from Saskatoon, Regina, Humboldt, Weyburn, and so there’s a good range of different talent and different kids, so it was good for them to get to play against different kids throughout the province,” he said.
A notable moment of the tournament was when the minis, who typically play in a shorter-length pool, competed in the full-length pool.
“It was pretty cool to see, because these little kids were having to swim the full length of the pool, and it was cool for their final game,” Chabot said.
With the season winding down, Chabot reflected on what has been a successful year.
“Every tournament we’ve entered, one of our teams has actually finished first,” he said.
“Just as a program as a whole, we’ve seen lots of growth from the newer kids that have come into the program this year. Their skills and abilities in water polo have really developed, so it’s been really cool to see.”
The final tournament for the Sharks will be March 29-30, when they head to Saskatoon for provincials.
“Everybody’s pretty excited, and hopefully we can finish off the season just like we have at every other tournament. It would be really cool to go the whole year with one of our teams finishing first,” Chabot said.
He encouraged anyone interested in the sport to sign up, as they are always looking to expand the team.
“If you have a kid that’s interested in water polo, I definitely encourage anyone to come out and give it a try,” he said.
