The Estevan Stripper Hockey Club is gearing up to host its 41st annual Molson Spring Bust hockey tournament and recently sought city support for the event.
Mayor Tony Sernick, a member of the club, recused himself from the discussion.
Council approved a special event permit, allowing the club to obtain a liquor licence for April 2 to 5 from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m., and April 6 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The club expects 40 teams to participate, with at least 20 coming from out of town.
The Strippers also requested that fees be waived for the use of the Power Dodge Curling Centre, which will host the tournament’s cabaret and beer gardens. In a letter to the council, they highlighted their long-standing community contributions, including an annual $2,000 donation to the Parent-Tot Skate program, with total donations reaching $240,000 since 1997. They also lend their cooler trailer to local non-profits and community groups at no charge.
The club emphasized the tournament’s economic impact, noting that last year, 36 teams booked two nights at local hotels, while others stayed Saturday night after the cabaret. They also stated that the cost of hosting the event is approximately $17,000.
“We’ve actually always waived these fees for the Strippers as well, due to the fact all the money they’re raising is given back to the community,” said Coun. Shelly Veroba.
Council also approved waiving the fees for the curling center.
