Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe spoke at the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities convention in Saskatoon Wednesday morning, reflecting on the province’s achievements, the future, and the priorities for the upcoming budget. He also touched on the current tariff and looming trade war with the United States.

Touching on the current economic situation, Moe noted the importance of the North American market for the Saskatchewan economy.

“What we advocate for wherever we go is a non-tariff environment, free and fair trade, with our trading partners around the world, and most certainly that’s important with our largest trading partner, which is the United States of America,” Moe said. “No one wins in a trade war.”

Moe added that the situation has been confusing and chaotic, which is hampering markets and hurting families across the continent.

The speech also outlined several key priorities for the Saskatchewan government as it prepares for the upcoming budget. The Premier focused on four main areas: affordability, healthcare, education, and community safety.

Moe emphasized the government's commitment to making Saskatchewan the most affordable place to live in Canada. He highlighted initiatives like the removal of the carbon tax on home heating, tax cuts for individuals and families, and municipal revenue sharing, which is set to increase by over $20 million.

The Premier outlined an increase in healthcare funding is likely, coming on the heels of the 12 per cent increase last year. Additionally, the government plans to expand urgent care centers and increase the number of surgeries, aiming for a record 450,000 surgeries over the next four years.

Moe reaffirmed the government's commitment to investing in education, particularly in improving K-3 outcomes, which are crucial for long-term academic success. Addressing growing concerns about crime, especially rural property crime and the spread of dangerous drugs like fentanyl and crystal meth, Moe outlined measures to improve community safety. This includes the addition of 500 new police officers and 500 recovery beds to tackle addiction.

Moe closed his address by praising the work of the SARM delegates, thanking them for their ongoing commitment to Saskatchewan’s growth and success. He reiterated the importance of collaboration between all levels of government to ensure a prosperous future for the province.
