There’s a saying they have at MaenDecks: “Once a customer, always a friend.” More an internal expression than a corporate slogan, it speaks to the company’s approach, finished product and reputation for service.
“We spend quite a bit of time at a job,” says Joel Maendel. “We’re often there for months at a time, so most of our customers – if not all – actually become our friends. It sounds cliche, but it’s true.”
Maendel and his brother Nathan co-own MaenDecks. It’s a family company, established in 2014 after the brothers and their father had spent time in the construction industry. When they decided to strike out on their own, it was a shared passion for outdoor spaces that determined their scope of work.
As the name suggests, MaenDecks builds decks and builds them well. But they do a whole lot more. From pergolas to fences, outdoor kitchens to sunrooms, and privacy walls to complete backyard designs, they’ve made a successful business out of turning backyard dreams into reality.
“We’re working on a huge project in Kenora – a 5-6,000 sq. ft. dock with a roof,” says Maendel. “It’s all cedar. It’s gorgeous. And in Winnipeg, we built a space that has a louvered aluminum pergola with a fireplace in it, a huge outdoor kitchen, some paving stones and a hot tub. It’s got all the features.”
Before a spade goes into the ground, Maendel and his team schedule a consultation with the prospective customer, visit the property and provide a 3D rendering, as well as the initial quote. Then, when building has begun, only the highest-quality products are used, and the job isn’t finished until the customer is completely satisfied.
“When we build a project, we manage it as if it was our own,” Maendel says. “We say our work is skillfully crafted, built to last.”
MaenDecks has already been booking into the 2025 season, and as the weather warms up the excitement for outdoor building projects will only increase. With that in mind, Maendel recommends scheduling a consultation as quickly as possible. Prospective customers and backyard enthusiasts can also meet him in person at upcoming trade shows, including the Lake and Cabin Show and Home and Garden Show.
As for the range of service, the company covers all of Manitoba and will take on projects at Lake of the Woods as well.
It’s a wide-ranging area with unique customers and diverse projects. Or, for MaenDecks, an ever-growing opportunity to make new friends.
“We love dealing with the local community,” Maendel says. “We’re Manitoba-based and family-owned. It’s a big reason people have been coming to us.”
