It outperformed previous The Last of Us trailers by at least 160%, proving that fans are more eager than ever to return to the series' post-apocalyptic world—one that Alberta helped bring to life.

The upcoming seven-episode season, set five years after the events of Season 1, follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they navigate a world that is even more dangerous and unpredictable—while also facing new tensions between themselves.

Returning cast members include Gabriel Luna (Tommy) and Rutina Wesley (Maria). At the same time, newcomers such as Kaitlyn Dever (Abby), Isabela Merced (Dina), Young Mazino (Jesse), Ariela Barer (Mel), Tati Gabrielle (Nora), Spencer Lord (Owen), Danny Ramirez (Manny), and Jeffrey Wright (Isaac) will bring pivotal characters from the video game sequel to life. Catherine O’Hara is also set to be a guest star.

Alberta’s Role in The Last of Us—and What’s Filming Now

While The Last of Us Season 2 was filmed primarily in British Columbia—using locations in Kamloops, Mission, Fort Langley, and Vancouver—Alberta still plays a role. Scenes shot in Calgary, Exshaw, and along Highway 1A help maintain the show’s signature aesthetic, keeping a visual connection to the locations that defined the series in its debut season.

Alberta was a major backdrop in Season 1, with over 180 locations—including Canmore and Fort Macleod—used to immerse viewers in the world of The Last of Us. Though its role in Season 2 is smaller, the province isn’t gone entirely. And with reports suggesting the series could span four seasons, there’s still a chance Alberta could take center stage again in the future.

That said, The Last of Us is far from the only major production rolling cameras in Alberta right now. The Calgary area remains a hotspot for film and TV, with multiple high-profile projects currently in production or set to begin soon:

  • Billy the Kid – Season 3 (March 19 – July 11, 2025) – Filming in Calgary and surrounding areas
  • In the Pines (April 7 – May 23, 2025) – Filming in Calgary
  • Reminders of Him (April 16 – June 12, 2025) – Filming in Calgary and surrounding areas
  • Lumi (February 20 – March 27, 2025) – Filming in Calgary and Yellowknife

And that’s just a snapshot. Productions like Smudge The Blades (filming in Edmonton) and The Land of NOD (filming in Edmonton and Yellowknife) further highlight Alberta’s status as a go-to destination for film and television.

The Order Proves Alberta’s Star Power is Growing

Alberta’s thriving film industry isn’t just attracting high-profile TV productions—it’s also making waves on the big screen. A prime example? The Order, a locally shot crime thriller that’s turning heads with both audiences and critics.

Filmed across Didsbury, Calgary, Bragg Creek/Kananaskis, and the Drumheller/Dorothy areas, The Order showcases Alberta’s stunning landscapes as the perfect backdrop for its high-stakes story of crime, extremism, and a race against time.

Directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, Assassin’s Creed), the film stars Jude Law as an FBI agent tracking a series of violent bank heists that spiral into something much darker. Nicholas Hoult plays the leader of a dangerous domestic terror group, adding a chilling layer of suspense to an already intense narrative.

Based on The Silent Brotherhood, a real-life account of one of the most notorious extremist groups of the 1980s, The Order delivers a timely and gripping portrayal of radicalization and violence. Critics are calling it "a time capsule but extremely relevant today", with comparisons to Hell or High Water and BlacKkKlansman.

Produced by AGC Studios, Chasing Epic Pictures, and Riff Raff Entertainment, The Order premiered in theatres on December 6, 2024, and is now streaming on Prime Video.

The Last of Us Season 2 premieres April 13 on HBO and Max.
