The city’s brightest young bookworms put their literary knowledge to the test as the Battle of the Books wrapped up, with grade 7/8 students competing in a fast-paced showdown of memory and teamwork.
Among them was a team from Spruce Ridge School, The Golden Pages, who brought experience and determination to the challenge—and this time, it paid off. After narrowly missing out on the top spot last year, they returned stronger and claimed victory in this year’s competition.
With this being their third time competing together, they had put in plenty of effort throughout the school year to prepare.
"It was really good, but I was really nervous," one team member admitted about the competition. Despite the nerves, they found the event rewarding and even had a few favorite books along the way, including Restart and Hatchet. "They were fun," one participant said about their top picks.
The team emphasized that strong memory skills were key to success. "You need, like, good memory in order to get the questions right," one member explained. Though they found some of the questions difficult, they encouraged other students to take part. "Being with everyone, [they] should probably try it," a teammate said.
The competition tested their literary knowledge, but for The Golden Pages, it was also about the experience and camaraderie that came with it.
Awards were also handed out for best costume and best sign.
For the grade 5 and 6 competition the winners were:

With two Spruce Ridge teams winning the champion title, they will host both events next year.
