Midale Central School posted an alert on Facebook earlier this week as they're hoping to convince people to slow down near school buses. That's an emerging problem, where they've seen more people ignore the signs telling them to slow down over the last while.
Cathy Harvey, the Principal at Midale Central School, tells people that caution is needed around buses stopping to load or unload kids.
"When kids are loading and unloading buses, it's very important that traffic stops so that we can ensure that our kids are safe. It's a law, it's not something that's suggested, but we continue to have people who are either unaware of that law or are choosing not to abide by it."
Harvey says that by ignoring that people are putting kids in danger around school buses.
This isn't the first attempt at educating people by the MCS along with other enforcement tactics.
"Lots of messaging to parents just in case people are unaware. I know that in our Community this is kind of a newer thing over the last couple of years, and so we're trying to make people aware, I think that's key. Also, we've had RCMP support in ticketing, so because it's a law, you're breaking the law, you get a ticket when you don't abide by it. "
Knowing exactly when to stop around a school bus is fairly simple once you learn the rules, says Harvey.
"Both sides, and they need to stop when their arms are out and their lights are flashing and they have a stop sign that comes out as well when the buses are in our drives, in school zones, and if their lights aren't on, it means that they're not loading and unloading kids, so it's safe for people to pass then."
Harvey says that taking even five minutes out of your day just to make sure kids can move around the school bus safely shouldn't be a big ask.
