The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) says it has launched a crime suppression initiative in the William Whyte neighbourhood following a surge in violent crime in February.

The area saw three homicides last month—two on February 15 in the 300 block of Alfred Avenue and another on February 27 in the 500 block of Magnus Avenue. Police also responded to multiple firearm-related offences, arsons, and assaults, raising concerns among both the community and law enforcement.

Crime suppression initiative

In response, the WPS Guns and Gangs Unit, supported by North District Community Support officers, conducted a targeted crime suppression effort from February 26 to March 9. Officers maintained a visible presence in the neighbourhood, focusing on gang-related activity and enforcing court orders.

Their efforts included proactive individual and traffic engagements, executing outstanding arrest warrants, and monitoring bail conditions. Many of the offenders involved were linked to criminal and gang organizations.

During the initiative, police recorded the following actions:

  • Arrests: 9

  • Individual engagements: 36

  • Traffic engagements: 21

  • Search warrant executed: One, in the 600 block of Manitoba, related to firearms

  • Warrant enforcement for court order violations

  • Criminal Organization High-Risk Offender (COHROU) checks, wanted person checks, and bail enforcement: 25

Community support and reporting

The WPS relies on crime analysis and community reporting to track trends and allocate resources effectively.

Residents can provide anonymous crime-related tips through Winnipeg Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS. The service offers cash rewards for information that helps solve crimes, recover stolen property, seize drugs or firearms, or locate wanted individuals.
