Cochrane Christian Academy (CCA) is rallying behind a unique and heartfelt fundraiser called Beauty & The Beards, spearheaded by Child Development Advisor Joy Lonsdale-Calkins.
The event, which will raise funds for Camp Kindle and the Kids Cancer Care network, has captivated the school community. Camp Kindle provides children with cancer, and their families, opportunities to attend camp, offering them a break from the challenges of treatment and diagnosis.
Lonsdale-Calkins, along with CCA Principal Mr. Samson, RCMP Cst. Nathan Moore and Cst. Andrew Epp, will be shaving their heads and beards to support the cause.
“The name Beauty & The Beards comes from me shaving my head as the ‘beauty’ part of it, and the others shaving their beards,” explains Lonsdale-Calkins, adding that her personal battle with cancer makes this initiative even more significant. She recently underwent treatment and hopes to be cancer-free soon.
Students from grades 6 to 8 are also joining the effort, helping fundraise by colouring their hair, with parental permission, and hyping up the school community with music and energy during the event.
"We're a school that really wants to give back, and this fundraiser reflects that spirit of support and kindness," says Lonsdale-Calkins.
