Over 160 karate competitors will be coming to Weyburn this weekend for the 40th annual International Martial Arts Championship. On Saturday, March 22nd, the best martial artists will be showcasing their skills, and Saskatchewan competitors will be fighting to qualify for the World Karate Commision provincials. Robyn Vilcu, student at the Vilcu Karate Klub, showcases the fun to be had.
“This includes a Lion Dance performance by Canadian Hungkuen out of Regina by black belts of Sifu Curtis Kautzman. As well, a welcome greeting by our very own Mayor, Jeff Richards. Some promotions of Black Belts given by Grand Master Harold Vilcu and Master Isaac Vilcu. Our tournament has held the largest black belt competition division in the province, so it’s something really cool to watch.”
It’ll take place at the Eagles gymnasium at Weyburn Comprehensive School with opening ceremonies starting at 9:00 A.M. Weyburn Mayor, Jeff Richards, will get things started with a welcome greeting. There will be a canteen with burgers, hot dogs, chips, juice, donated baking, candy bags and more available to purchase. Spectator fee is $10 per person, with ages 6 and under free to attend. Vilcu states there is also an anniversary celebration in order.
“We are celebrating Vilcu's Karate Klub 45th Anniversary this year in honour of Grand Master Harold Vilcu for his lifetime achievements. Master Harold has started this, I believe the first tournament he held would have been 40 years ago, but he has been teaching and has had his club for 45 years, so we're doing a big celebration for him.”
