Elizabeth Katherine (Kae) (Hunter) Yurkiw

February 23, 1944 - February 10, 2025

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Elizabeth Katherine "Kae" Yurkiw on Monday, February 10, 2025.

Kae was born in Swan River, Manitoba. At the age of 14, her family moved to Winnipeg. In 1968, she and her husband, Nick, moved to Portage la Prairie when they purchased Tastee Bakery, marking the beginning of their lifelong journey as business owners in the food industry. Together, they owned and operated several establishments, including the beloved Tastee Bakery and the Pic-a-Pop store on Saskatchewan Avenue West. A proud and devoted member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Electa Chapter 2,. She was known for her passion for cooking and hospitality, always ensuring there was more than enough food for everyone, whether at an event or a special occasion. Her warmth and generosity brought joy to countless friends, family, and community members.

For over 50 years, Kae was a cherished part of Canada's National Ukrainian Festival, where she shared her deep love for Ukrainian culture, cooking, and traditions with festival-goers and her family. Her dedication to the festival made her a beloved figure whose presence will be deeply missed.

Kae was a devoted wife to her late husband, Nick Yurkiw, lovingly caring for him until his passing in 2020. She was a cherished mother to Sherry (Keith) and a loving sister to Brenda (Roger). She was a proud grandmother to Amber (Martin) and Derek, Kelvin (Wendy), and a beloved great-grandmother to Tatiana (Stephen), Jett, Finn, Jorja, Abel, Madeline, Caleb, Rose, and Noah. Her love, wisdom, warmth, and sassy humor will live on through her family and all who were fortunate to know her.

Kae was predeceased by her husband, Nick, her parents Violet and George Hunter, her brother Barry, and his daughter Crystal.

Mom's kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to her family will be fondly remembered.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, March 29th, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Masonic Hall, 50 Tupper St S, Portage la Prairie, MB. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Kae's memory to Central Plains Cancer, 318 Saskatchewan Ave E, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8.
