Young ladies who have never tried hockey before have the chance to lace up at a free, fun-filled day.

The annual "ESSO Girls Come Try Hockey" event is set for Saturday, April 12th, at SLS Centre in Cochrane.

Designed to introduce girls aged four to 12 to hockey, the free event offers a fun and welcoming environment for newcomers.

“We’ve been doing this for over eight years now, and it’s a great way for girls to give hockey a try,” said volunteer Sarah Larooi. "We provide equipment, so parents don’t need to worry if they don’t have any."

Participants will enjoy fun activities both on and off the ice, with sessions led by experienced coaches." Larooi adds, “It’s a little party with games, skill sessions, and snacks for the girls after they hit the ice.”

With hockey continuing to grow in Cochrane, this event has contributed to a 320 per cent increase in female participation in recent years.

“Our community is incredibly supportive,” Larooi said, “We’ve got over 220 female athletes, and our U7 and U9 all-girls teams are the cutest.”
