École Olds High School (EOHS) students are happy with the success of the Horizons Leadership Conference they helped to host on March 6.

Chinook's Edge School Division explained close to 150 students attended the one-day event from several Chinook’s Edge schools and from neighbouring school divisions.

According to the Horizons website, the conference is designed to motivate, inspire, and inform participants about making their school a better place to live and learn.

EOHS teacher Kevin Hronek emphasizes the event's value, as it allows students to apply their leadership skills in a real-world setting. Student leaders have the opportunity to connect with like-minded peers, gain new ideas and skills, and bring those insights back to their own schools.

“I love meeting new people and learning about activities that we can bring back with us,” says Sophia D., a Grade 12 EOHS student. “We live in a small town. It’s good to hear different perspectives.”

Nadia Ladack and Levi Stanford were the motivational keynote speakers at the 2025 Horizons conference.

Sophia says after having been involved in planning the Horizons Leadership for several years she can look back and see the growth.

"We’ve gotten out of our comfort zones, and made friends that we can talk with after the conference.”

Another Grade 12 EOHS student, Chelsea B. said this year is her first time in leadership. Before this year, she was afraid to speak, but now she has more confidence to do that and connect with others. It helps her not to be afraid of the future.

The school division has 12 schools in neighbouring communities, including Olds, Mountain View County, Didsbury, Crossfield and Carstairs. Chinook's Edge has a total of 11,000 students across 40 Central Alberta schools.

Bert Church High School also held a Horizons Leadership Conference back at the beginning of March. The other Alberta locations for the event included La Crete and Fort McMurray.
