Two Alberta runners are preparing for the challenge of a lifetime, 10 marathons in 10 days across 10 provinces, all to raise $1 million for children's charities.

Mike Hanson of Redwood Meadows and Dave Morin of Calgary are the driving force behind the 10in10in10 Marathon. They are running to support three organizations: Autism Aspergers Friendship Society (AAFS), KidSport, and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Both runners have deep connections to the non-profits they are running for. Morin has worked closely with Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Hanson, an autism advocate and father of twin boys diagnosed with autism, says the mission is personal.

"It changed our priorities as a family. We wanted to find a way to give back, and running is our passion."

The challenge kicks off in St. John’s, N.L., on May 16 and will conclude in Calgary on May 25. Along the way, they will stop in major cities across the country, covering 422 kilometres each.

"It's bigger than anything we've done before," says Morin. "But we believe it's in the realm of possible."

"This is not going to be comfortable," says Hanson. "But it’s worth it. We’re doing this for the kids."

Training has been intense. The duo is running over 100 kilometres per week, and Hanson often starts his runs at 3 a.m.

Morin, balancing work and family, fits in early morning runs before heading to his job.

"Finding time is tough," says Hanson. "I work all day, have a couple of hours with my family, then train on weekends. It’s a lot, but it’s only a couple more months."

The logistics are just as demanding. The runners will travel by RV and flights to ensure they reach each province on time. They will stay in hotels along the way, with some sponsorships helping cover accommodation costs.

So far, the duo has raised over $300,000.

"We’re making progress, but we still need support to hit that $1-million goal," says Hanson.
