A fire broke out earlier today during roofing work on the new expansion at Bow Valley High School in Cochrane.
Cochrane Fire Services responded swiftly, containing the blaze, and students have safely returned to class.
"Around 10:30 this morning, Cochrane Fire Services received several 911 calls reporting a fire on the roof of the school," says Cochrane Fire Chief Shawn Polley. "On arrival, there was actually no smoke showing. It appears the contractor was doing some roofing work when the fire broke out in the area where they were working."
Construction workers attempted to control the flames with the equipment they had on hand. Fire crews arrived shortly after to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
"We had a quick response from Cochrane Fire Services and engaged our partners at Rocky View County to assist with one engine," says Polley. "The workers did what they could initially, and our crews completed full suppression and extinguishment."
The fire was contained quickly, and there was no significant damage to the school. Fire crews remained on site for about 30 minutes to investigate and ensure the area was safe.
"The school is already back in session," Polley confirms. "The building has been cleared as safe for all students and staff to return to class. Our fire investigation team is reviewing the incident, and we should have more information soon."

Students were promptly evacuated as a precautionary measure. Polley praised school staff for their efficient response.
"The teachers and administration at Bow Valley High School acted quickly to get all students out to the field," he says. "They were able to evacuate and return to class in a short amount of time."
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but officials have assured the community that there is no further risk to students or staff.
