The Family Resource Centre (FRC) is making strides in connecting young babysitters with families in need of childcare while also providing exciting opportunities for families during Spring Break.

Melissa Morrison, the Executive Director at FRC, discussed several new opportunities designed to support local families.

One of the programs is a babysitting call-out program aimed at pairing certified babysitters with families.

"For a while now, Peter's been offering the Red Cross Babysitting course, and we thought what a cool opportunity to try to connect new babysitters with families who are looking for childcare."

The initiative offers young people the chance to create a profile and get connected with families in need of sitters.

"Our hope is that if a family uses that sitter, they might leave a bit of a review in our book so that other parents can also kind of learn from those experiences."

For those interested in adding their name to the babysitter list, Morrison encourages those who have completed their Red Cross babysitting course to contact the centre via email or stop by to fill out a profile.

As Spring break approaches, the FRC is offering several programs, including the "Stay Safe" course for children learning how to handle emergencies and stay home alone.

"If maybe your kid has finally reached the age where they can stay home by themselves for spring break, this is a good option for families."

Additionally, the FRC will host a drop-in play day on April 1, with no registration required. Families can visit at any time to use the playroom. Other spring break activities include the Grand Pals program, Book Buddies, and Kids in the Kitchen.

The Family Resource Centre also received a $15,000 grant from the City of Portage la Prairie, which will help fund these programs. Morrison noted,

"It's an increase this year to us, so that also feels really, really nice for us to know that the city recognizes what we do and is supporting us."

Looking ahead, the FRC has a busy April ahead including, the "Easter Family Fun Day" on April 12 and promises to be a highlight, with live bunnies and activities for all.
