While spring might have officially arrived, many winter sports are continuing, with lots in their playoff and championship rounds.

Here in the Opportunity City, the Weyburn Curling Club is gearing up for one of those events.

“The Weyburn Curling Club is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the Provincial Seniors Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships from March 27th to the 30th,” said Chris Mass, Chairman of the Senior Playdowns. “There are six women’s teams and 11 men’s teams. We have coming our current provincial Scotties Champion Nancy Martin and former Olympic Champion Joan McCusker as well.”

Martin represented Saskatchewan at this year’s Scotties Tournament of Hearts, placing 4th in pool A, and has previously represented Team Saskatchewan and the Senior Women’s National Championship. McCusker, who has been a curling player, coach, and commentator, is best known for playing second on Sandra Schmirler’s Gold Medal-winning team.

“Don’t let the word senior fool you,” laughed Mass. “These curlers are in fine physical condition and they curl against the best curlers in the province and some of them curl against the best curlers in Canada still so it’s going to be some good curling.”

Mass noted that teams are set for the Championship but encourages Weyburn residents to come take in the curling.

“Day passes are $6 and a week pass is $20,” he noted. “Really not that much money to come and watch some top-caliber curling.”

He noted that there are some local teams on the ice as well and everyone is encourage to watch, cheer and, if possible, volunteer.

“We do still need some volunteers,” Mass noted. “If you have some time and would like to volunteer, of course, volunteers get into the event free, you can get ahold of Gary Erickson at 861-5554 or the Weyburn Curling Club at 842-2236.”

He added that they are looking for anyone with any availability.

“You could commit to one day, one draw or the whole tournament. It’s totally up to your schedule.”

He added that the kitchen and lounge will be open for the duration of the event and 50/50 tickets will also be available.
