The Weyburn Concert Series is gearing up for their second last show of the season, Every Brilliant Thing, which is set to be a little bit different than what they normally bring in.

“People are used to Concert Series bringing musical events,” said Linda Aitken of the Weyburn Concert Series. “This is actually a play. This is a bit different for us but it does touch on something that’s close to all our hearts in some way, shape or form. The play actually focuses on depression and gratitude.”

Every Brilliant Thing, which features one actress playing all the roles in the show, is the story of a young child whose mom is dealing with deep depression.

“His mom ends up in the hospital and, as a little kid, he wants to know why his mom is there,” explained Aitken. “So adults tell him that his mom is unable to be happy.”

The child in the play tries to help his mom by creating a list of things that make him happy.

“The list would have such things as eating ice cream and going on a roller coaster ride. He puts this list on his mom’s pillow.”

As the play continues, the list and story evolve, and he continues to suggest things to his mom.

“The whole thing ends up just taking on a life of its own and we have the production, Every Brilliant Thing,” Aitken said. “It’s a really cool storyline that will speak to all of us.”

Aitken did note, however, that there are some serious topics touched on in the story that might not be suitable for children.

“In this particulate production, the play literally talks about severe depression and suicide and probably isn’t appropriate for children who would be under the age of 14.”

She also noted that the play will not have an intermission but will have a ten-minute talk at the end of the production.

Tickets are available right now at Old Fashioned Foods or the Weyburn Review. They are also available at weyburnconcertseries.ca or showpass.com
