A new face is on patrol with the Weyburn Police Service. On Wednesday, the WPS announced Constable Matt Sanders was sworn in.

Cst. Sanders is a 17-year veteran of policing, who is originally from Weyburn, before his career took him to other centres. Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John said Cst. Sanders originally wanted to start his career at home, though.

“We didn’t have any openings at that time, so he got on with the Estevan Police Service, went to the Police College, and then from Estevan he went to Medicine Hat, and has been there ever since,” St. John explained.

Constable Sanders is already on patrol with the WPS, St. John added, noting that being originally from Weyburn is a good thing.

“He knows the community, knows what’s expected of him in the community,” St. John stated, adding he brings experience and expertise to the table. “We don’t have to train him with how you get around the city, what kind of calls do you go to, what to expect – he's been there, he’s seen it, he knows it.”

The WPS is currently looking for two other officers.
