The Provincial government is providing funding to help improve flood and drought infrastructure. Government of Alberta

Drought and flooding have been felt across the province over the last few years.

Not only that but building the critical infrastructure needed to protect Albertans can be costly for municipalities.

Because of that, the Alberta Government is investing over $19 million into 10 different projects through the Drought and Flood Protection program, which will help to safeguard businesses, protect homes, and save lives.

"This funding will be spread across the province with eight municipalities and two First Nations receiving support for a wide range of projects," explained the Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, Rebecca Schulz at a media conference.

Schulz added they are working with communities and providing these grants, because the needs differ from community to community, and this funding will help build critical flood and drought infrastructure for those communities.

Siksika First Nation is one of those communities receiving funding, which will be used to construct a berm to safeguard their newly constructed Washington Sewage Lagoon, as well as some other local infrastructure.

In total, the provincial government is investing $125 million over a five-year period into the Drought and Flood Protection Program.

So far, $50 million has been invested into 28 projects, and the next round of funding applications will open in October.
