The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has launched an inquiry following an incident in Portage la Prairie which left one adult man hospitalized yesterday evening.
According to the RCMP, officers spotted two individuals who resembled suspects from an earlier criminal case. While an officer engaged with an adult woman, the man left the scene on a bicycle. Believing the man was evading arrest, a second officer activated the police vehicle’s emergency lights and pursued him. During the pursuit, the man on the bicycle was struck by the police vehicle on St. George Ave., between Cochrane St. and Eighth St. SW.
The man was transported to Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg by STARS ambulance. He was admitted and will undergo surgery for injuries sustained to his leg and shoulder.
As the situation meets the IIU's criteria for a serious injury, the unit has assumed responsibility of the investigation. They are asking witnesses or anyone with relevant information, including video footage, to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
No further details will be provided at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
