Technalogix, based in Red Deer, has been awarded a $6.98-million subcontract by the Government of Canada for the Polar Over-the-Horizon Radar (POTHR) Phase 4.

The $48.4-million contract was initially awarded to Atco Inuvialuit Frontec Services Ltd. in Calgary, which subcontracted a portion to Technalogix.

The contract involves providing amplifiers for a high-tech radar system designed to modernize NORAD and enhance Canada’s defense and sovereignty in the North. Technalogix will deliver 288 amplifier systems, which are essential for detecting fast-moving aerial targets over Canada’s Northern Territories.

These amplifiers supply the necessary power to "paint" the targets and relay information to military forces.

"We will be the first line of defense looking north to secure our sovereign airspace from Russian and Chinese actors attempting to enter our space," explained Thomas King, the company’s COO. "The companies we were up against were about three times the size of ours, but we have been involved in Arctic security for the last 12 years."

This radar system will be the largest deployment of over-the-horizon radar in the world and is being completed entirely by Canadian companies.

The project is expected to create four high-paying jobs at Technalogix.

"We are looking at expanding our engineering group as well as our testing facility as well as our manufacturing piece," King explained.

The contract runs until the end of 2027.

Operating in the Red Deer area for over 35 years, Technalogix was founded by Robert Gullon of Sylvan Lake.

The company supplies RF equipment to local FM radio stations and over-the-air TV stations currently employing 13 people.
