The first day of the 2025 Senior Curling Provincials is in the books, with a lot of action on the sheets in Weyburn.
The first draw of the tournament was at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, with three games on the men’s side.
The Bibby rink, curling out of the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club, was up against the Nikolesjin rink from Weyburn. Team Nikolesjin would open the game with three in the first end, and went on to score in four of the remaining seven ends to win 8-4.
Blaine Duncan and his rink from the Nutana Curling Club played the Sunderland rink from Wadena and came away with a 7-3 victory. Duncan’s team picked up four in the fourth end, and after adding a single in the seventh, the two teams shook hands.
Weyburn’s Chris Mass and his rink were up against Dale Bit and his group out of the Moose Jaw Curling Club. Mass would take advantage of the hammer in the first end and proceeded to score in every end, with the two teams ending after six. The final score was 8-0 for the Weyburn team.
The first game on the women’s side was in the afternoon draw, and it was a close one, going nine ends between Deanne Miller-Jones and her rink out of the Callie in Regina, and Nancy Martin and her team from the Nutana Curling Club in Saskatoon. After exchanging points throughout the game, it would be a single point in the ninth end from Martin to win 6-5.
It was a busy afternoon draw on the men’s side, with four games. The Mass eink was looking to improve with a win over the Joyce rink out of the Nutana. That didn’t happen, though, as three in the fifth end put Joyce up 8-2, and the two teams shook hands.
Bruce Korte and company, curling out of the Nutana, played the Duncan rink. Korte would score two in the seventh, and the game ended at that with a 7-2 final.
Jeff Hartung from Langenburg would face Ron Brown from Prince Albert. The game would go six ends, with Hartung securing a 7-0 victory.
Team Nikolesjin picked up their second win of the tournament against Randy Bryden out of the Callie Club in Regina. The final score in that game was 5-4.
The evening draw had five games on the men’s side, and one on the women’s, with all six sheets in use.

Team Duncan bounced back from the loss against the Norte rink with an 11-4 victory over Team Bitz in six ends, and the Bryden rink picked up their first win of the tournament with a 6-2 victory over the Sunderland rink.
On the women’s side, the lone game had Joan McCusker and her rink out of the Yorkton Curling Club, against the Holland rink from the Sutherland Curling Club out of Saskatoon. McCusker would blow the game open with four in the fifth end, and went on to a 9-2 victory in seven ends.
