The sound of crashing pins filled VB’s Entertainment as the community came together to support Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of the Pembina Valley during their biggest annual fundraiser, Bowl for Kids’ Sake. The event, held on Thursday (March 27), highlighted the organization’s mission to provide mentorship opportunities for children in the community.
Janelle Neufeld, Executive Director of BBBS of the Pembina Valley, expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of support. "It’s been an amazing day," she said. "Seeing so many teams come out to bowl, donate, and get involved truly warms my heart. Every dollar raised today is crucial in helping us keep our doors open and continue offering mentorship opportunities to local youth."
Gateway Resources leads the charge
The event started with a strong showing from Gateway Resources, whose team brought in $700 in pledges. Their leadership team added to the excitement with a pie-in-the-face fundraiser. "A huge shoutout to Chelsea from Gateway for spearheading this effort," said Neufeld. "It’s amazing to see that level of creativity and commitment."

A fundraiser that makes a difference
Bowl for Kids’ Sake has long been a staple event for BBBS. Transitioning from the former Valley Bowling Lanes to VB’s Entertainment, the fundraiser continues to grow, with local businesses and individuals stepping up to support the cause.
Neufeld emphasized the importance of these funds in sustaining the organization’s work. "The economic landscape is challenging right now, so every contribution means more than ever. Fundraisers like this allow us to provide mentorship opportunities and build a network of support for children in our community."

The call for mentors
The event also underscored an ongoing need for volunteers, especially male mentors. "We have a waiting list of children hoping to be paired with a mentor," Neufeld explained. "Even an hour a week can make a lasting impact on a child’s confidence, happiness, and future success. Group mentoring has been one way to address the volunteer shortage, but the need is still significant."
Leaders from local organizations echoed the importance of mentorship. Lavonne from Segue Career Options, who bowled alongside Eden Healthcare Services, highlighted the value of positive adult influences. "Having someone who consistently speaks encouragement into a child’s life can truly change their trajectory," she said.

A community celebration
Attendees of all ages enjoyed the lively atmosphere, with 50/50 draws, silent auctions, and raffles adding to the excitement. Bowlers, sponsors, and supporters alike shared a common goal: to lift up children in the community and invest in their futures.

Looking ahead
While Bowl for Kids’ Sake was a resounding success, the work of Big Brothers Big Sisters is far from over. Neufeld encouraged the community to stay engaged. "This is just one of many fundraisers we host throughout the year. There are so many ways to get involved, whether it’s through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word about our programs."
