A new band is making waves in the Pembina Valley music scene. "Lowstake Affection", featuring Tim deBekker, Devin Addison, and newly joined bassist Nadia, is set to perform at Smitty's Lounge in Winkler on April 5th.

deBekker, a seasoned musician, has been sharing his talent online and playing in various bands over the years. "I remember when I was really young, my brother Jacob taught me some of my first songs," deBekker recalls. His journey has taken him through multiple genres, from jazz to rock to country.

Addison, primarily a drummer, started in a blues and classic rock band when he was 17. "I originally played guitar when I was about 10 or 11, then put it down for 15 years to focus on drums," he says. His return to the guitar led him to take lessons from deBekker, and their mutual love for music sparked the formation of the band. "We hit it off right away and started playing together," Addison adds.

Building a sound

The band is excited about their evolving sound. "We're focused on getting a solid group together where we can have a full sound, and I think that's something we have now," says deBekker. With a three-piece lineup, the group has the flexibility to explore different styles. "Our bassist Nadia also plays guitar and loves metal, so we’re looking at incorporating that too."

For Addison, the resurgence of rock 'n' roll in the area is exciting. "There’s been a lot more demand for rock music lately, which is awesome. As we tighten up our setlist, we're looking forward to booking more gigs."

Upcoming show at Smitty’s lounge

Lowstake Affection’s upcoming show at Smitty’s Lounge will feature two sets. "Devin and I will start off with an acoustic set for the first hour," deBekker explains. "Then, after a short break, the full band will take the stage with a more high-energy set as the night progresses."

The band hopes this show will be the start of a busy year of performances. "We're definitely looking to book more gigs and get our name out there," says Addison.

What's in a name?

Choosing a band name was a challenge. "We went through so many options, but every time we Googled a name, it was already taken," Addison says. Eventually, they landed on Lowstake Affection. "Any name can work—it’s all about how you sound and connect with the audience. If the music is good, people will remember you."

Although the band is still in the early stages of branding, Addison acknowledges the need for an online presence. "We don’t have a social media page yet, but we should probably get on that," he admits with a laugh.

With their upcoming show and a growing setlist, Lowstake Affection is ready to make their mark. Fans of rock, blues, and acoustic music won’t want to miss their April 5th performance at Smitty’s Lounge in Winkler, starting at 7pm. There is a $5 cover charge.
