The Rotary Club of Portage la Prairie recognized local organizations and volunteers during its annual Friends of Rotary luncheon this past Tuesday, March 25. Held at a local venue, the event honoured non-Rotarians who have supported the club’s initiatives, from community projects to fundraising efforts.

Awards highlight collaborative spirit

Certificates of appreciation were presented to several key contributors, including the City of Portage la Prairie, Stride Credit Union, and the Community Foundation of Portage and District. Volunteers like former Mayor Irvine Ferris were also celebrated for their ongoing support.

“We’re so thankful for the community and the organizations that we have,” says Preston Meier, Public Relations Director for the Rotary Club. “It really warms my heart to see how everybody works together to bring this community to what it is today.”

Meier emphasized partnerships such as the Duck Pond restoration project, aided by the Community Foundation, and Rona’s contribution to the “Rona Deck” initiative.

Tosha hotel reflects on leadership

President Tosha Hotel, who has led the club since July 2024, spoke about her tenure. “It’s been a group effort,” she says. “Everyone has been so helpful, steering me in the right direction and reassuring me I’m doing a good job.”

Hotel, who joined Rotary just a year before becoming president, highlighted the collaborative culture that eased her transition. Her term concludes on June 30, with Dave Roberts set to take over as president.

Looking ahead

The club is preparing for its 75th-anniversary celebrations next year and its upcoming Lobsterfest fundraiser. This year’s Lobsterfest, a drive-through event featuring fresh East Coast lobster, aims to bolster community projects.

“We’re excited to keep supporting Portage,” says Meier. “None of it would be possible without our incredible friends.”

Hotel added a message for incoming leaders: “Everyone has your back. Enjoy the experience—it’s a great way to meet more people and give back.”

The Rotary Club of Portage la Prairie has served the community since 1949, focusing on local infrastructure, youth programs, and charitable initiatives. With its 75th year on the horizon, they're hopeful for many more years of service in the future.
