As local drivers and community members are taking in the sunshine of the first week of spring, SGI is keen to encourage safe driving this season.
Maintaining an appropriate following distance and staying mindful of puddles and potholes are just a few of the SGI's recommendations for motorists this spring.
Jeremy Pilon, communications consultant at SGI, highlighted that folks should keep an eye out for wildlife, especially around dawn and dusk when many animals are most active.
"There could still be snow coming, so you want to make sure your car is still ready to deal with snow," he shared. "That means having your snow brush handy and making sure you keep on the winter tires for a little longer.
"We also know it's starting to melt, so it could be slushy out there, and that can make roads slippery or create deep ruts."
People are also reminded to be aware of vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and motorcycles, who are beginning to head out again at this time of the year.
"Once the snow is all melted off the roads and the temperatures are consistently above seven degrees celsius, is when it's the best time to take snow tires off," Pilon said. "You don't want to take them off any earlier because they're still useful when it's below seven degrees, but any time it's warmer than that, you're starting to wear out the tires.
"Not just yet, but probably in the next month or so, we'll reach where that average is above seven degrees Celsius."
It's also important to remember the spring road weight restrictions and the speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour on all Saskatchewan roads unless otherwise posted.
