As Moose Jaw prepares to play host to the BKT World Men's Curling Championship at Temple Gardens Centre, one of the men who won the very first world men's curling title will be watching from the comforts of his living room on Moose Jaw's north side.
Arnold Richardson and his wife have been living in Moose Jaw for a number of years, enjoying life at a local retirement home and staying as active as possible.
Arnold was a part of the Ernie Richarson curling team that won the first ever World Curling Challenge in Scotland in 1959. They'd go on to win the world title again in 1960, 1962 and 1963.
The team got it all started in Stoughton, Saskatchewan before moving to Regina.
Ernie was the skip, his brother Garnet played second while cousins Wes (lead) and Arnold (third) rounded out the Richardson rink.
They were the first in Canadian curling history to win four Canadian Championships and finished their careers with an international record of 21 wins and one loss along with the four world championships.
When I asked Arnold if he'd like to take some time to reminisce, he graciously obliged and invited me to his home earlier this month.
It was so fitting when I entered his home, he was busy watching the World Women's Curling Championship on his television!
Have a listen to our visit as Arnold takes a trip down memory lane.
