It was a perfect Day 1 at the BKT World Men's Curling Championship at the Temple Gardens Centre for Team Canada.
After downing Japan in the opening draw, Canada picked up a 7-5 win over Germany.
Canada looked like they were going to cruise to a victory until a missed shot led to Germany scoring three in the ninth end.
"We were in control of the whole game really, maybe called the wrong shot, wrong weight choice on my last one in nine, just rip the back one and we are probably shaking hands," said Canada skip Brad Jacobs.
The reigning European champions from Germany, consisting of skip Marc Muskatewitz, third Benjamin Kapp, second Felix Messenzehl and lead Johnannes Scheuerl, started off the game with last rock advantage.
Facing three Canadian stones in the house, Muskatewitz attempted a triple take-out that didn't quite go his way. Canada forced Germany to hit and stick for one. However, Muskatewitz rolled away and Canada stole the first point of the game.
In the second end, Muskatewitz was once again left with a hit-and-stick for one. This time he made it to get the Germans on the board.
After blanking the third end, Jacobs made a quiet take out for two in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
Trailing by two, Germany was forced to a draw for one as Canada led 3-2 at the fifth end break.
Already counting one in the sixth, Jacobs made a draw to the eight foot to score his deuce and extend Canada's lead.
With his final stone in the seventh, Jacobs froze to the German rock at the back of the button. Muskatewitz's draw for one was too heavy and Canada stole one to go up by four.
Germany blanked the eighth. In the ninth, Jacobs ticked a guard with his last rock and Germany successfully made a split off a guard for three to make it 6-5 for Canada heading home with Canada having the hammer.
Team Canada curled 93 per cent, while Jacobs was 89 per cent.
Canada has a short day on Sunday. They have a bye in the morning draw at 9 a.m. before taking on South Korea at 2 p.m. before wrapping up the day with another bye for the 7 p.m. draw.
