As Manitobans embrace the arrival of spring, many are eager to refresh their homes. Layal Jadhav and Shawna Lumgair from Sawatzky’s Furniture and Appliances in Morden and Winkler recently joined a morning discussion to share their expertise on spring cleaning, decluttering, and the latest home décor trends.
Jadhav and Lumgair agree—spring is the perfect time to reset both your living space and your mindset. "It is time," Jadhav said. "But we’ve got to get through this messy business first!"
While some dread the cleaning process, Lumgair sees it as a way to improve overall well-being. "It improves my mental health when I’m in a space that’s not cluttered or full of things that don’t bring me joy," she said.

Turn your hangers and donate
One of Lumgair’s go-to decluttering tricks comes from her parents. "Once a year, we turn all the hangers in the closet the opposite way," she explains. "At the end of the year, if any hangers are still the opposite way, it means you didn’t wear those clothes. That’s when I donate them."
Jadhav, currently in the middle of a home purge herself, agrees that a clean space brings a sense of relief. "We’re painting right now, so we have to get rid of things," she shares.
Once the cleaning is done, the fun part begins—redecorating. "There’s actual proven history that bringing fresh colours into your space releases serotonin in your brain, which improves your mood," Jadhav explains. Bright greens, yellows, and oranges can help make a home feel more inviting.
Lumgair notes that furniture trends are shifting toward vibrant hues. "Colour is definitely making a comeback," she says. "I’m usually a neutral girl, but I love the rusts and greens that are back in style."
Small changes, big impact
For those looking to refresh their homes without breaking the bank, Lumgair recommends simple swaps. "It doesn’t have to be an entire sectional or couch—little things like pillows, rugs, or even changing out your bedding can make a huge difference."
She also suggests switching up artwork seasonally. "We carry a brand called Brunelli that offers fun, exciting prints in soft neutrals or pastels. It’s a small, affordable way to refresh a space."

Expert picks from Sawatzky’s
When it comes to standout furniture pieces, Jadhav and Lumgair each have their favorites. "I love the Luna sofa by Palliser," Jadhav says. "It’s a Canadian-made reclining set with heat and massage. It’s sleek, not bulky, and has a beautiful high back."
Lumgair enjoys customizing sectionals to fit different spaces. "I love building sectionals—it’s like a puzzle! The Decor-Rest sectional at the front of the store is one of my favorites because you can configure it in so many ways."

Final advice: Love your space
As homeowners look to refresh their spaces this season, Jadhav and Lumgair emphasize the importance of loving every piece they bring in. "If you don’t love it in the store, you’re not going to love it at home," Lumgair advises. "Make sure it fits your space and style before committing."
For those unsure about a purchase, Sawatzky’s offers an approval program, allowing customers to test out art, pillows, or rugs at home before making a decision.
With the right mindset and a few expert tips, spring cleaning and redecorating can be an enjoyable way to welcome the new season. Whether it’s decluttering, adding pops of colour, or investing in a statement furniture piece, Jadhav and Lumgair encourage you to create spaces that bring you joy.
