Airdrie residents are discovering more than just delicious subs at Firehouse Subs; they’re finding a brand deeply rooted in community and support for first responders. "Besides the wonderful food, it was the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, which supports first responders, that was a clincher for us," says Fran Reid, a local franchisee. This commitment to Public Safety stems from the founders, two firefighting brothers, who started Firehouse Subs 30 years ago.
The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, born from the brothers' desire to help after Hurricane Katrina, provides crucial grants to first responders and public safety educational groups. "The Canadian Public Safety Foundation has already provided over $100,000 in grants to Alberta fire departments," Reid explains. Locally, this support is evident in a recent donation to the Carstairs Fire Department for a vital vehicle extraction tool. "It's a really amazing piece of equipment," notes Pearl Hystad, co franchisee with the Reids.
But the subs themselves are a standout. Firehouse Subs uses a unique steaming process for their meats and cheeses, ensuring optimal steam infused flavour and tenderness. "That's totally where the difference is," says Hystad, "because the steamed meat and cheese keeps its moisture and releases its flavour." Popular choices include the iconic Hook & Ladder, the Smokehouse Beef & Cheddar, and the Western Canadian favourite, Brisket Hat Trick. Currently, a special collaboration with Hot OnesTM adds an exciting twist, offering varying levels of spice to the Hook & Ladder.
And, if you’re a heat seeker, Firehouse Subs’ beloved hot sauce bar is back, featuring a range of flavors from mild to fiery. "You can add your choice of hot sauce to any of your Subs," Hystad suggests, "and if you love it, we sell the actual bottles to take home."
Airdrie has embraced Firehouse Subs enthusiastically. "When we first opened, we went a little bit viral on the Airdrie Dad's Facebook page, and our first day was crazy," Reid recalls. "The sub is remarkable," adds Mike Reid, a fellow franchisee. "This Sub is the best you've ever tasted."
"People are becoming aware of it one bite at a time," Fran Reid concludes. "It's a fantastic product and brand, with the Public Safety Foundation reaching into the community with lifesaving equipment." Firehouse Subs offers more than just a meal; it's a taste of community spirit.
