"An Uncomfortable Mess: and "Fleeting Beauty" are showing at the Humboldt and District Gallery.

A new tandem exhibition has opened at the Humboldt and District Gallery for the month of April, and patrons have a chance to meet and talk with the artists this Thursday, April 4, 7 pm at the Gallery.

“An Uncomfortable Mess” by Bonnie Conly deals with a bit of short grass prairie iconography, the tumbleweed. While these tangled transients are often in the background of harsh landscapes, this time they take the spotlight.

“I am captivated by the nostalgia that surrounds tumbleweeds and intrigued by their individual fragility and collective strength.” Conly says in the exhibits introductory write up. “It resonates with me that tumbleweeds are moving objects that become tangled and stuck. There is something quite visceral about a tumbleweed’s structure and movement that relates to contemporary social environments. I perceive tumbleweeds as metaphors for complex divisive social issues surrounding concerns of inequality and isolation.

The colourful and turbulent collection suggests that collective while still paying attention to each individual piece as its own unique expression.

“Fleeting Beauty” is the collection offered by artist Cheryl Andrist. Her works focus on the delicate and captivating nature of butterflies and moths. The fleet and feather-winged insects invariably catch the eye in an otherwise static garden space.

These beautiful and gentle creatures do charm all of us, and I am sure, for many, my fiber art will bring forth past childhood memories.” Andrist says in her own intro. “Today, there seems to be way less butterflies and moths flitting here and there. I want my images to speak to an audience with intent to bring attention to what we are losing in nature.”

The artists will meet gallery goers on Thursday during an opening reception sponsored by the Humboldt and District Gallery.
