The UFA Agricultural Community Foundation this morning presented the Weyburn Agricultural Society with $25,000.
"The UFA Agricultural Community Foundation was established last year, and our real mandate is to support rural communities and support agricultural farmers and ranchers to ensure that there is support for just great communities," shared Foundation Board Chair Jennifer Wood.
The Weyburn Agricultural Society has been working on upgrades to the Exhibition Hall / Curling Rink. The building has had some brick repair, new paint, soffits, fascia, and eavestroughs, as well as tin coverage at the front of the building.
"So still working on that, still work in progress, but we're getting there," said Board President Tyler Metheral.
He said the building is very important to the community of the Weyburn area as the Curling Rink in the winter months as well as a hall for renting to host events.
"We just pushed the ice out the other day, and this weekend we have an event."
This Saturday night, the Young Fellows Club of Weyburn will host their Live Auction event.
Metheral said they had applied for the funding but went ahead with the work either way, as it needed to be done.
"Applications open in June of every year and close in August, and then they're reviewed, and winners are determined," explained Wood. "What we're looking for is in rural communities to support either education or recreation or cultural activities. So there are definitely lots of applications that come forward. This building here is a prime example."
"The Weyburn Ag Society is supporting the community in so many ways year-round. It's been here, my understanding was 65 years, and so just imagine the events and the support to the real community over all these years and we're happy to be able to help them with their exterior renovations so that there are more events and more memories to come."
