Spring is in the air, and what better way to welcome the season than with a captivating live performance? Every Piece of Me, a locally written and directed "dramedy," is set to take the stage at the Kenmor Theatre. This heartfelt and humorous production, penned by Darien Dawley, explores the complexities of family secrets, identity, and the passage of time—all wrapped up in an engaging and emotional story.

A story of secrets, memories, and family ties

At the heart of Every Piece of Me is Miss Miller, a mother who has spent her entire life hiding the truth about her children’s father. But as her now-grown children start asking questions, long-buried memories begin to surface. The play’s unique storytelling format brings the past and present together, with the stage split in half—one side depicting Miss Miller’s present-day apartment, the other recreating a 1960s diner where her past unfolds in real-time.

“It’s a mix of comedy and drama,” Dawley explains. “I love banter, so the dialogue is quick and witty, but there are also deep, emotional moments that really resonate. It’s a story about real people with real emotions.”

A talented local cast brings the story to life

The production boasts a stellar cast of local talent, including Darlene Reimer as Miss Miller, Keith Freisen and Emily Fehr as her children, and Andrew Derksen as Jackson, a love interest from the past. Ezra Reimer takes on the role of Joe, the owner of Joe’s Diner. Dawley herself will also be stepping into the spotlight, playing a mysterious woman who stirs things up in the 1960s storyline.

“I wasn’t originally planning to act in it,” says Dawley, who is also directing. “But as the play developed, I realized I had a clear vision for this particular character. It’s been a challenge wearing multiple hats, but the cast has been incredibly supportive and flexible.”

A local theatre scene that welcomes all

Though new to the Pembina Valley theatre scene, Dawley has been impressed by the vibrant and welcoming community.

“It’s really accessible,” she says. “In Winnipeg, theatre can be harder to break into, but here, you can just walk in and be part of something amazing. There’s always something happening in Winkler and Morden, whether it’s through Flatlands Theatre or Kenmor Theatre’s productions.”

Why you should see Every Piece of Me

Dawley hopes audiences leave the show entertained, moved, and maybe even a little teary-eyed.

“I want people to have a great time, laugh a lot, and then walk away feeling something meaningful,” she says. “The story deals with themes we all can relate to—family, truth, and how the past shapes us. And yes, you might need a Kleenex or two.”

She also encourages the community to come out and support original, locally written work. “This isn’t a big-name, well-known play. It’s something fresh, something different. I’d love to see people take a chance on a story they haven’t heard before.”
