Built in to the regular duties of a Weyburn police officer is checking that community members on release conditions are complying with them. Deputy Chief with the Weyburn Police Service, Shane St. John, sends this reminder after two separate people were found in violation last week.

“We are out checking conditions and if they're not in compliance, they will be charged so I think it's just more of a reminder to the people that are on conditions that that we do check them and we check them often just to make sure that they are in compliance.”

The instances last week involved one man and one woman. Both were found in violation and charged before being released for a future court date. St. John says if conditions continue to be violated, more serious consequences can result.

“If it continues to be a pattern, we could hold them for court and then it'd be up to the judge to decide ‘can they be trusted on those conditions? Or do they need to be held in custody for a more secure plan?’ That could happen to maybe a 24-hour curfew or maybe electronic monitoring depending on the seriousness of the breach.”

He continues, saying it becomes more serious if they are found engaging in another criminal offence.

“Then then usually we're always keeping them to be held before a judge because that that just stops the seriousness of the situation.”
